Split, Croatia – Podgorica, Montenegro

It doesn’t get much more epic than this. Start on Croatia’s Adriatic coast in Split, a city famous for being built within the palace of a retired Roman Emperor, Diocletian. From there, cycle the width of the country to the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where you pass the enchanting city of Livno, which is famous for wild horses and great cheese. The road turns south to Mostar and its famous UNESCO-listed bridge before continuing to the Tara River with the world’s second deepest gorge at the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. The Trans Dinarica takes cyclists through Durmitor National Park, also on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, before riding along the Dinaric Alps to the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica.
